A new payment method in public transport
Since 2011, the OV-chipkaart has been the standard payment method in Dutch public transport. To make travel more accessible, public transport operators have been transitioning to EMV payment technology (Europay, Mastercard, Visa) since 2022. This new payment method allows passengers to check in and out using their bank card or smartphone.
Collaboration between NS and Sigmax

A future-proof inspection solution
From July 2021 onwards, Sigmax will provide more than 5,500 NS employees with a hybrid inspection solution for both existing payment methods (OV-chipkaart and barcode) and EMV-based transactions. Sigmax is also supplying new handhelds to NS for this purpose, with the ‘A77’ device from PAX being selected. René Bal, Business Unit Manager at Sigmax: “The PAX A77 meets the required PCI standards and offers the ability to support inspection across all media thanks to the presence of two SAM slots. This new handheld, combined with Sigmax’s robust inspection software, ensures that NS has a high-quality inspection app both now and in the future.”
